If you smoke and watch the news, you already know about spice, the synthetic marijuana substitute that can only be sold under the label “not for human consumption”. Seems safe to smoke, right? Wrong. As spice continues to be sold across the world, the issues associated begin to emerge. It is unsafe, widely used, and far more dangerous than plain old Mary Jane.

What Is Spice?

For those of you that don’t know, spice is a blend of legal herbs that contain synthetic cannabinoids. Where as there are thousands of studies on th effects of marijuana, there are ZERO studies published on the effects of this fake pot. While the chemicals and herbs used to make it are legal, we have no idea what effect they have on the human body. However, there have been studies on the chemicals contained in the synthetic pot and occasionally, there were chemicals missing from the manufacturers ingredient list. Which basically means that people could potentially be smoking the ground up grass that you scrape off the blades of your lawnmower.

Violent Side Effects

Most people have heard of the violence associated with this substance as well. Since the effects of synthetic pot don’t last as long as marijuana, the user must consume more of it to get their fifteen minute high. Smokeshops go through tons of this stuff a day, sometimes in sales as big as $7000. That’s just in one day. So once the shops close for the night, there is no way to get the spice fix. The photo above is an example of a spice related break in. A person repeatedly bashed the door with a rock until he realized that it wasn’t going to break. The worst part is that the door in the photo was brand new… The previous one had actually been smashed in and spice was stolen. These unfortunate events also occurred within a week of each other. The only people that break down doors over genuine marijuana are the cops.

The Fight Against Fake Marijuana

There has even been a campaign launched against fake marijuana. In D.C., the govenment has been pushing a zombie style anti-synthetic ad line that includes photos of young adults as zombies. A study in D.C. found that the AVERAGE age of synthetic marijuana users is THIRTEEN! Remember, the effects of the new drug are unreasearched, especially on growing children. The synthetic drug doesn’t show up on drug tests and is cheaper than the real thing, therein lies the appeal. Users of fake weed say that it tastes awful and burns the throat and lungs when smoked.

John Huffman is a scientist that discovered 400 synthetic cannabinoids. However, he never intended for the spice to get so out of hand, as he stated in an interview with the LA Times. Huffman actually supports banning the false weed and taxing genuine marijuana. He makes a good point by saying that these synthetic chemicals are dangerous, while marijuana is not.

So basically, the point that I’m making is stay away from spice. If you’re calling the cops on yourself, eating another human’s face, or smashing out smokeshop windows, perhaps you should look in to setting down the spice and opting for the real thing. While laced weed is still possible (anyone who messes with weed in a negative way is a scumbag anyway), it is definitely less of a risk to smoke weed. Marijuana has properties that reacts in our brains. Spice is human made, has unknown dangers, and no known long term effects. I recommend you think twice before you “try it because you have a drug test coming up”. If you have to deal with drugs tests of probation, take a break from smoking rather than subjecting your brain and body to an unknown assailant.
